The Bold 9000 vs Bold 9700 – Indepth Review
Written by admin on December 20, 2009 – 6:15 pm -This review is going to be a work in progress… Especially since it’s Christmas and there won’t be much time to do a complete work, but it’s very much needed on the web… A comprehensive overview of the differences and what you should know…
Size Comparison…
The Bold 9000 is definitely a much bigger unit with a much larger screen physically. The resolution on the Bold 9700 is slightly larger (480×360 pixels) versus the Bold 9000’s (480×320 pixels). Even thought the Bold 9000 is slightly lower in resolution (screen pixels) it’s actually physically bigger making it easier to read and navigate at a glance or for those with glasses.
But the Bold 9000’s larger size also means a larger keyboard making it easier for those with larger thumbs to type on…
Battery Life…
It’s no secret that the biggest innovation of the Bold 9700 was practically DOUBLE the battery life. When I retired the Bold 9000, I was getting a dead battery at 4pm after a heavy 8am to 4pm usage. That meant charging it up when I got home from work if I expected to use it in the evening while out with the family for any reason… Not good! The Bold 9700 started out acting much the same as the Bold 9000 in the first few days of use but on day 3 or 4, it started to last well past the usual… I usually go to bed on heavy usage days with 2/3rds of the battery still left.
Operating System…
The Bold 9000 runs on the original OS 4.7 (although some are actually running 5.0 on it with little troubles), if you want supported OS 5.0 the only option is the Bold 9700 at the moment as RIM has not released 5.0 officially for the Bold 9000. What’s the difference? There’s some areas of 5.0 that have been improved and obviously battery life is part of that too. The look and feel is a bit slicker and nicer and the browser seems to be faster and crash a lot less. The threaded SMS (Text message conversations grouped by contact) makes communication easier too. Beyond that I don’t think there’s any major differences as – at this point in time – most software titles out there seem to work well on both.
Don’t believe what you read, they both run the same processor and so quite a bit of the guts are no different. Any speed differences are operating system and software related and NOT hardware related at all.
Camera Resolution…
The camera on the Bold 9700 is 3.2 Megapixels and comparable to the iPhone camera where as the Bold 9000’s is only a 2 megapixel. The camera on the Bold 9700 also has some fancy focus abilities making it able to take a nicer picture… However the CCD (Image Sensor) isn’t much improved so the overall quality in low lighting is still pretty bad and pixelated and no different than any other camera phone and neither phone’s camera can take a descent picture at high speed. Trying to take a good quality pic of your fast moving 2 year old is still not an option.
Navigation…
The old debate of the trackpad vs the track ball… I’m sure it’ll be going on for years to come… But there’s reason to be in either camp. Yes the ball is probably a bit easier for gaming and a pinch more accurate and easy to use, but… so easily prone to getting mucked up! A heavy user will find themselves cleaning it frequently and having all kinds of ball issues.. IF you ever have ball issues, you’ll quickly realize how useless the device is without it!
Summary…
As I said, I’ll be updating this with more info and will remove those mentions when it’s complete, but overall the Bold 9700 is a better phone with more features and futureproof for support from RIM and software developers as most developers move to more OS 5.0 Software. But I too miss blogging and typing and even reading articles on the slightly larger screen.
But working with a Bold 9000 at this stage means sacrificing a better camera, longer battery life, dirty trackballs and older OS 4.7… The choice is yours.

Texas Hold’em King for Bold 9000 and Bold 9700
Written by SyncMaster on December 17, 2009 – 11:56 am -We haven’t gotten into games much on this site, but there are some games that – when you have a few minutes to spare – can really add life and enjoyment to your day to day boringness.
Texas Hold’em King 3 is the latest version of a series of mobile poker games created by Magmic Games. They instantly connect you with a community of over 100,000 players that you can play against. They claim to have the very best graphics of any blackberry poker game out there… For only $5 bucks, you really can’t argue the price at all.
Basicly, you’re buying a license to own this game for the life of your blackberry, and potentially other blackberries too! Huh? Well, let me explain… If you buy Texas Holdem King from Bplay.com, you can log into your account and re-download it again – even a year later for free.
But wait, there’s more!
When you buy software from Bplay, your not just buying the Bold 9000 or Bold 9700 version only! If you buy a Bold 9700 down the road, but you bought it for the 9000… You can just log into Bplay and re-download the file for 9700’s instead. Cool huh?
Texas Hold’em is a game of skill and deception. It’s one of the most popular games online and in casinos. Check it out… Pretty cool!

FREE Animated Themes for Bold 9700
Written by SyncMaster on December 15, 2009 – 10:34 am -I bet you’ve been wondering where to get descent quality, really neat ANIMATED themes for your Blackberry Bold 9700 and maybe even some of those in the 9000 crowd too! I know I hunted for a long time, and ended up just buying the high quality ones at Bplay because I just didn’t like the corny poorly coded ones at other sites.
Here’s one free one that’s pretty awesome… Even during Christmas, this one really seems kinda “Vacation like…”
This one is a Crackberry Forum exclusive and you can get this one and others by watching the Crackberry Forum for updates…
Some other sites that may have free animated themes…

Bplay Holiday Themes for Bold 9700 – Bold 9000
Written by admin on December 14, 2009 – 5:24 pm -There’s nothing that quite gets you into the Christmas Holiday spirit better than holiday pictures and that yule log that’s played on TV stations accross the nation on Christmas morning. Cute story, my family has watched this TV show religiously since it first started airing and my brother has re-named it “The hand show” and they’d make a big joke out of when the hand came out to change the log on the fire…
Anyway!
The holiday themes are quite warming, one of my favorites is the Fireplace Animated Wallpaper theme from Bplay… Even when your waiting at a crowded bus stop, checking the time, looking down at that little fireplace burning away seems to warm you up at least 1 Degree… Well, maybe it doesn’t, but it does make your mood brighter!! Friends and family will definitely start to think your Blackberry is much cooler than those hip iPhones when they see themes like this exist… It totally sparks the neatest conversations.
I haven’t tested all of the themes from the holiday collection, but I can honestly tell you the Fireplace theme isn’t slow, doesn’t bog down your blackberry and won’t cause you much trouble. Just remember the Icons do look different than the regular set, so you’ll need a day to get used to them… AND they’re a bit difficult to differentiate one from another so it takes a little getting-used to… But a small price to pay for holiday cheer and friendly compliments…
Go ahead, show someone your blackberry screen and tell them to warm up by YOUR fireplace! haha!

Blackberry Bold Freeware
Written by admin on November 28, 2009 – 3:10 pm -
Navigating what will and won’t work for your Blackberry is no easy task, especially if you’ve never owned a Blackberry or been thru the entire lifespan of these things.
We’ll try and keep things focused around Blackberry Bold’s only on this website and so for that purpose… There’s really only 2 types of “Freeware” that will work for you.
Generation 1 Bold – OS 4.7 Software.
I don’t know why they haven’t upgraded the bold 9000 to the new OS 5.0 yet, because it seems pretty stable and should run fine on an old 9000 but regardless at this stage 4.7 is only available on newer devices.
Generation 2 Bold – OS 5.0 Software
Available on the Bold 9700, this system appears to be slowly being rolled out to all the Blackberries in the lineup. It’s currently available on the Storm, Storm2, 8900, and a few others as they come out. Many of these apps for the 8900 will work great on a Bold 2 (Aka, 9700) however many Storm specific applications will NOT work on a Blackberry Bold 9700 as there’s a major difference between a touch screen application and a trackpad app.
Later I’ll take the time to post some resources to getting freeware for each.

switching themes
Written by admin on November 28, 2009 – 1:14 am -I’ve discovered that switching themes can really lower your blackberry productivity.
It often changes where your default icons usually are and causes quite a few headaches sometimes moreso than its worth for the pretty looks you get out of it.
Yes there are lots of steps you can take to prevent it but maybe have a weekend planned of reorganizing before you install any theme…

Bold 9000 – Gmail doesn’t work on wifi
Written by admin on November 25, 2009 – 5:12 pm -
Yes, it’s true, Gmail and other applications like Viigo don’t work on WIFI.
As you know, I stopped using the blackberry 9000 as my daily phone, but my wife is now using it as a web browser around the house and the truth is that it’s great for that via wifi and battery life doens’t become such an issue anymore. But if you want to use it to check your GMAIL, your hooped… at least via the Custom Gmail App Google designed.
The real trick comes when you realize there are POP3 email softwares out there that you can install on it and then use the Gmail pop3 settings to continue using it as an in-home email/web browsing device.
That’s the work around solution we have right now.
